Challenges

Marine science and conservation challenges in the next century will require global perspective and local engagement. That is, the issues we face in the ocean are not limited to any one country, culture, ethnicity, religion, community, political ideology, sexual orientation, gender identity or socioeconomic background.

Leadership

As leaders and trainers of leaders in marine science and in work to discover solutions to environmental challenges, we must be inclusive if we are to succeed. We must find voices to speak and lead in marine science across this diversity of humankind, and we want these voices to join us at the Marine Laboratory.

Invitation to Study

All students in good standing from US and international universities and post-baccalaureate students are welcome to enroll in our academic courses for a semester or summer session. Throughout the academic year we welcome speakers, students, and researchers from all over the world and from every kind of background.

Opportunity

The Marine Laboratory community strives to be inclusive in its faculty, staff, and student composition and is proactive in developing opportunities and programs that promote diverse ways of learning and knowing.

Commitment

The administrative leadership of the Marine Laboratory and members of the Pivers Island community work together to identify further ways to build inclusiveness and diversity. We have the resources and the will – the desire – to ensure we do the most we can and we will act on every idea or need that comes to us.

Invitation to Share Ideas

Whether you are browsing our webpages to learn more about us and our programs, or are a staff, faculty, or student member of the Pivers Island community, we are interested in your ideas of how to bring diversity to environmental science and how to improve the community sensibility of inclusiveness on the Island.  Please contact Andy Read (aread@duke.edu) with your thoughts and ideas.

If you have questions about LGBT on Pivers Island and want a student perspective, contact island-lgbt@nicholas.duke.edu.

Support from Durham

The Marine Laboratory has easy access to professionals in Durham who can coach us in developing conversations within our community about diversity and awareness and issues regarding our sense of inclusiveness. We draw on these professionals throughout the year and celebrate the expertise they share with us. If you have ideas of issues you would like to see discussed, please find a way to let one of the Marine Lab administrative staff know. We want to create a culture of support and be proactive rather than reactive.

The Duke Durham professionals are also available to provide confidential support to members of our community, and we provide contact information below. Members of our Island community also find ways to offer support to others who may feel alone. For those of you who seize these opportunities, your inclusiveness is valued and we all learn important lessons from you.
