Research Associate, State Policy

Summary:
The Nicholas Institute invites applications for its Research Associate for State Policy.  The position will work closely with the Institute’s Director of State Policy to engage state and local policymakers and stakeholders, particularly in North Carolina, and to develop environmental policy proposals.  Particular focal areas include water allocation, water quantity, water quality, climate change and energy, and offsetting emissions of greenhouse gases with improved agricultural, animal waste and forestry practices.

The Nicholas Institute develops substantive environmental policy solutions, or lays the groundwork for such solutions at the national, state, local and international levels, in the following policy areas: climate and energy, oceans and coastal, ecosystem services and conservation, and water resources. The Institute is headquartered at Duke University in Durham; the Institute maintains a permanent office in Washington, D.C. See www.nicholas.duke.edu/institute.

Requirements:
Applicants should possess a J.D. or similar advanced degree and have at least 5 years of experience working with North Carolina or state environmental issues.  Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to analyze complex environmental legislation, fiscal notes, rules, regulations, guidelines and policies. Applicants should be able to draft legislation or rules, when requested by policymakers. Applicants should have the ability to communicate complex environmental questions and policy approaches to lay audiences, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary commensurate with skills and experience.
