Environmental Leadership Awards Presented to Three Current or Recent PhD Students at Duke Marine Lab

March 21, 2008

BEAUFORT, N.C. – Three current or recent PhD graduate students at the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, N.C., have been named recipients of 2008 Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) awards for Student Environmental Leadership for graduate students.

Elliot Hazen, a current PhD candidate, and Leigh Torres and Zoe Meletis, recent PhD graduates, were selected for the honor in recognition of their work to launch the Marine Lab’s Green by Design Course and its “Green Wave” student association, which works with Marine Lab administration to promote sustainability on the Pivers Island campus.

Student Environmental Leaderships awards are presented annually to graduate students or graduate student groups that demonstrate innovative and creative leadership in addressing environmental issues on campus.

The awards were presented at the EMAC luncheon on March 17.

"I did an initial search of schools that offered an environmental policy degree. And what attracted me to this school is the professors and their research interests, and sort of the breadth and wealth of the courses that are available to take here -- everything from the policy courses to the more quantitative classes and the science classes at the Nicholas School."
