DURHAM, N.C. – Three Nicholas School students have been hired into the U.S. Forest Service Pathways Program.
Thomas Caggiano (MEM/MF ’16), Emily Ulrich (MEM/MF ’16), and Olivia Tempest (MF ’16) were hired into the program while at the Society of American Foresters National Convention last month in Salt Lake City. They will start internships next summer before beginning full-time work with the Forest Service after graduation.

The Pathways Program requires 640 hours of work in the assigned area, after which time the students have the opportunity to work as full-time USFS employees anywhere in the nation. The internship allows students to learn about a variety of aspects of forestry before choosing a focus area.
Thomas Caggiano will be working in the USFS’s Rocky Mountain Regional Office in Golden, Colorado, as a forester trainee. He will be involved in timber sale planning as well as silviculture and NEPA compliance within forest management.

Emily Ulrich will be working in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in Joseph, Oregon, as a NEPA Planner. She will serve as the contact for project planning efforts between and within USFS organizations, and will instruct USFS staff on natural resource management proposal standards and guidelines.
Olivia Tempest will be working in the Coconino National Forest in Happy Jack, Arizona, as a timber sale planning and preparation intern. She will be engaged in the planning and implementation of the Four Forest Restoration Initiative, which works to restore ponderosa pine in northern Arizona.
