Nov. 9 - "Meeting the New Drinking Water Standard for Arsenic: Occurrence, Implications and New Technological Solutions for Treatment"
A talk by Malcolm Siegel, PhD, MPH, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Siegel’s talk is an examination of the interplay between public
health, geochemistry, engineering, and policy as he shares results of congressionally
mandated pilot studies conducted at SNL. These studies were carried out
to compare the arsenic removal performance of innovative adsorptive media
in an effort to reduce water treatment costs that occur due to the new U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to reduce the maximum contaminant
level (MCL) for arsenic from 50 to 10 parts per billion (ppb).
Dr. Siegel is a principal member of the technical staff at Sandia National
Laboratories and adjunct associate professor in the School of Medicine at
the University of New Mexico. He is the author of over 55 scientific articles,
book chapters and peer-reviewed reports.
