Ocean Management Past, Present, and Future
Mike will talk on the way management choices are made about our oceans and on efforts to improve how those choices are made. Drawing on his 15+ years’ experience in Alaska he will explain why comprehensive, holistic management is needed and describe some of the problems inherent in the way offshore oil and gas, fisheries, and other extractive industries are managed.
He will describe the campaign effort he helped develop and organize seeking to protect the Arctic Ocean from potential impacts of risky offshore oil and gas activities.
Mike Levine is a recognized expert on the regulation of offshore oil and gas activities, fisheries management, and the U.S. Arctic, has testified before Congress on multiple occasions and has published a series of legal and scientific articles.
As Senior Arctic Fellow for Ocean Conservancy he works to bring comprehensive, science-based management and stewardship to choices about the Pacific and Arctic large marine ecosystems.
Prior to joining Ocean Conservancy, Mike spent nearly10 years in Juneau with Oceana, focusing on potential impacts of offshore oil and gas activities and the interactions between large-scale commercial fisheries and marine mammals. He also worked in the Juneau office of Earthjustice.
