Lynn Maguire, a founding member of Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, will retire June 30.
Maguire, professor of the practice of environmental decision analysis, joined the faculty in 1982.
Maguire’s research uses a combination of methods from decision analysis, environmental conflict resolution and social psychology to study environmental decision making. Her recent applications of decision analysis include the management of rare species, invasive species and wildfire risk.
Former and current colleagues and students shared their memories of Maguire for a scrapbook, which she received during a retirement party May 5. Here are some selections:
“I have admired your adherence to core values throughout your career. Your thoughtfulness and fairness is widely recognized and appreciated by your colleagues and your students. I have also admired your ability to adapt to change exemplified by changes in your research agenda through time.”
- Norm Christensen, Nicholas School founding dean and professor emeritus
“Numberless are the students she has guided and helped. Lynn has added to our curriculum courses in environmental dispute resolution and community involvement. And she has contributed to our knowledge in both of these areas.”
- Robert Healy, Professor emeritus
“Warmest congratulations on the big impact you have made in your career at NSOE, and many thanks for sharing your wisdom and encouragement when I was a newcomer to the school. I have enormous admiration for your thoughtfulness, candor, and small-person ergonomic expertise.”
- Megan Mullin, Associate Professor of Environmental Politics
“I will always be grateful for your supervision for my PhD degree (1987) in what was the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. I appreciated your advice for my research … and the calm deliberation with which you helped me jump through all the doctoral degree hoops.”
- Susan K. Jacobson (PhD’87), University of Florida Distinguished Teaching Scholar and Professor
“I took decision analysis with Dr. Maguire and it was very influential in my thinking – so much so that I am now an associate professor in the environmental field and teach students a bit about it every semester using the same Keeney book she used.”
- Rachael Shwom (MEM’01), Rutgers University Associate Professor
