Building a more sustainable future isn’t something that happens overnight. It takes deep knowledge, sound decisions, and considerable passion and commitment to making our world a better place.

At Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment, we channel the passion and environmental ethos of our world-class faculty and students to bring knowledge, skills and innovative ideas to bear on our world’s pressing environmental challenges. When foundations with similar goals engage with us, we can all achieve much more than we can do alone.

Impacts

from knowledge to solutions

Whatever your foundation’s environmental interests, the Nicholas School almost certainly has a research program focused on the issue. Nicholas faculty and students are pursuing studies in a wide range of fields, from conservation of endangered species, to managing forest hydrology, to economic modeling, to uncovering environmental toxins in household items.

Foundation partners also have access to several innovative research centers within the Nicholas School that bring together scholars and professionals with wide-ranging expertise to address timely natural resource and environmental issues. These include the Center on Global Change, the Duke University Wetland Center, the Center for Tropical Conservation, and the Duke Center for Sustainability & Commerce.

By asking the tough questions and applying rigorous research methods, we give voice to those who cannot speak for themselves and inform effective, future-focused decision making.

training tomorrow’s environmental leaders

The Nicholas School’s highly regarded professional master’s, doctoral and undergraduate programs attract bright, passionate students. Through a combination of rigorous classroom academics, practical skills-based instruction, and internships and client-based projects where knowledge and skills are applied to real-world practice, Nicholas students graduate well prepared to advocate for the environment, whether they choose a career path in a nonprofit organization, government agency, academia or business.
