Videoconferencing

Videoconferencing is available between Durham and the Marine Lab in Beaufort via any active network connection. Other locations may require other arrangements. Please allow a minimum of five working days for setting up and testing any videoconference with any outside organization.

Videoconferences between the Durham and Beaufort locations of the Nicholas School can be complicated to arrange as equipment and rooms need to be reserved at all participating locations. You will need to contact staff in both Beaufort and Durham to make arrangements.

It is possible to videoconference scheduled classes between Durham and Beaufort. Interested students and faculty should contact IT as early in the semester as possible to make these arrangements. Requirements differ slightly in that in addition to securing a location, someone from the class in both locations must also take responsibility, after training, for setting up, breaking down and returning the equipment.

Before planning a videoconference with Nicholas School IT, you should review the following guidelines:

In Beaufort, room reservation requests should be directed to mlbooking@nicholas.duke.edu.  Please include the room you would like to use, the date(s), the beginning and end time, the number of people you anticipate attending, the purpose of the meeting, and requests for AV equipment or video conferencing.

In Durham, use this form to schedule a videoconference. The organizers are responsible for arranging a location. When scheduling a conference room, allow for 20 minutes setup time prior to start, and sufficient time after to break down the equipment.

Teleconferencing

The videoconferencing systems in most of the conference rooms in Environment Hall and the LSRC can also be used for teleconferencing without video.

Conference phones are also available on loan from the help desk. These are VoIP (voice over IP) phones that require 10 minutes to register on the network, but can offer better sound quality for teleconferencing than the built in system speakers.

Systems are available in Durham and at the Marine Lab to capture audio, video and presentation slides. Facilities vary, but if you are interested, submit an inquiry using this form.
