"Social Media" is a catchall term that describes any conversational, online media, from Facebook to weibo and hundreds of other services. As environmental communication and advocacy increasingly occurs online, there is a need for clear, effective writing that take advantages of unique elements of this writing medium. There is a common misconception in the outreach world that "if you tweet it, they will come" – that audience will naturally find your material – but this is rarely the case. This course will cover not only the nuts and bolts of the dominant social media platforms, but also how to build and manage an audience, how to target your outreach initiatives to reach the intended stakeholders, and how to write clearly and distinctly in these often restrictive media.
