DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke Environmental Leadership (DEL) Program is offering two online short courses this fall on environmental communications for working professionals.

The seven-week “Intermediate Environmental Social Marketing Strategy” course, to be held Oct. 5 to Nov. 20, will provide intensive training on how to plan and implement a social marketing campaign to successfully bring about behavioral change in large audiences – a critical challenge facing many environmental programs today.

The six-week “Writing for Environmental Professionals” course, to be held August 31 to October 9, will provide environmental managers, educators and researchers with the skills needed to produce clear, concise, informative text for a wide range of uses, including policy memos, manuals, blog posts and interpretative signs.

Both courses are being offered as part of the DEL Program’s Certificate in Environmental Communications.

The “Intermediate Environmental Social Marketing Strategy” course is structured to give students step-by-step guidance on how to take audience research and develop a positioning statement; incorporate the “4 P’s” from commercial marketing into their strategy; communicate their new social marketing strategy to a creative team; and pull all the components of the strategy together into a cohesive, results-oriented campaign.

It will be taught by Brian A. Day, an environmental educator and communicator with more than 35 years’ experience. Day has taught courses on environmental communication at the University of Michigan, American University, Wayne State University and the Washington Center. He also teaches DEL’s introductory-level course, “Environmental Communications for Behavior Change.”

Tuition for the course is $825 if you register by Sept. 20, or $850 after that.

The “Writing for Environmental Professionals” course is designed to teach participants how to master the most important aspects of professional writing: organization; use of evidence; clarity and cohesion; writing for your audience; and incorporating feedback during the revision process.

The popular course, now in its third year, is taught by Nicolette Cagle, a lecturing fellow in the Thompson Writing Program and an instructor at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

Tuition is $1,000 if you register on or before August 16, or $1,075 after that.
