Josie Ballew, a first-year Master of Environmental Management (MEM) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) concurrent degree student, recently shared insights into why she's pursuing concurrent degrees, advice for students considering the concurrent degree path and her favorite memory so far.
I chose the MEM/MBA program to combine my passion for environmental stewardship with strategic business expertise. This dual degree gives me the tools to drive innovative, community-focused solutions for environmental and social challenges.
As a first-year MEM/MBA, I've been focusing on community engagement and entrepreneurship with nature-based solutions. These experiences have helped me think creatively about how to align environmental and social goals with sustainable business strategies.
I would recommend leveraging the network and interdisciplinary opportunities to carve out a unique professional niche that combines your passions. Focus on building practical skills and honing your storytelling and public speaking abilities—they’re invaluable for driving impact in any field.
My favorite memory so far was the western field trip. It's typically for forestry students, but MEMs can benefit from the exposure to new industries, ideas and environmental professionals. The trip was educational, beautiful and, most of all, fun! It was my first experience here at Duke and it's going to be a hard one to beat.
