DURHAM, N.C. – Twelve students pursuing Master of Environmental Management or Master of Forestry degrees at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment have been awarded Nicholas Scholarships covering up to two-thirds of their tuition.

The Nicholas Scholars program is the most prestigious scholarship offered by the Nicholas School. This is the third year the scholarships have been awarded.

Established with funding from five endowments and the Nicholas School’s Annual Fund, the program enables the school to award up to 15 Nicholas Scholarships each year to incoming Master of Environmental Management (MEM) or Master of Forestry (MF) students from diverse backgrounds and experiences who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and academic excellence.

This year’s cohort of Nicholas Scholars is comprised of 12 outstanding students from the Classes of 2020 and 2021 who were selected for the two-year program from a highly competitive field.

They are:

  • Cameron Adams, who is pursuing an MEM in Coastal Environmental Management;
  • Rupinder Bakhshi, who is pursuing an MEM in Ecosystem Science & Conservation;
  • Janet Bering, who is concurrently pursuing an MEM in Coastal Environmental Management and a Juris Doctor (JD) degree;
  • Beverly DeSouza, who is pursuing an MEM in Ecotoxicology & Environmental Health;
  • Shivangi Jain, who is concurrently pursuing an MEM in Ecosystem Science & Conservation and a Master in Public Policy;
  • Njeri Ruth Kara, who is pursuing an MEM in Energy & Environment;
  • Cheryl Lee, who is concurrently pursuing an MEM in Energy & Environment and a Master of Business Administration;
  • Sena McCrory, who is pursuing an MEM in Ecotoxicology & Environmental Health;
  • Suzanne Mullins, who is pursuing an MEM in Environmental Economics & Policy;
  • Ruby Stanmyer, who is pursuing an MEM in Water Resources Management;
  • Corey Sugerik, who is pursuing an MEM in Environmental Economics & Policy; and
  • Cai May Tan, who is pursuing an MEM in Environmental Economics & Policy.
