Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment will honor 29 graduates during a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science recognition ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, in Duke’s Love Auditorium, within the Levine Science Research Center. Graduates studied earth and climate sciences, environment, ecology, marine science and conservation, and environmental policy.

Students selected Rafaella Lobo from among their peers to address graduates. Lobo, who will receive a Ph.D. in marine science and conservation, is a founding member of the Duke Marine Lab’s Seas the Day podcast and of Duke’s Ocean Diplomacy Working Group, an interdisciplinary blend of students, faculty and practitioners who study the complex political and social issues, institutional arrangements, agreements and negotiations involved in ocean diplomacy.

While at Duke, Lobo also earned a Certificate in Latin American Studies. She has a master’s degree in political science from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás, in Brazil.

The event will be livestreamed and recorded for those who cannot attend in person. Visit the Nicholas School website for more on its doctoral degrees.

Additional Nicholas School recognition ceremonies include an event for graduates from the International Master of Environmental Policy program at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Field Auditorium of Grainger Hall; an event for professional students at 4 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Duke’s Wilson Recreation Center; and an event for undergraduates at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Wilson Recreation Center.
