Laura Webb Smith coordinates public outreach for City of Durham Stormwater and GIS Services. Seven years ago she worked with several community members to launch Creek Week. Now 18 partners strong, Creek Week has expanded its impact to involve students, artists, and hundreds of volunteers to clean up and bring awareness to Durham’s urban streams. Two other NC localities have since started their own Creek Weeks based on the model.
Laura led a residential green infrastructure project to install 41 rain gardens, 108 cisterns, and 106 trees in a subwatershed of Ellerbe Creek. The innovative approach used a reverse auction to allocate the stormwater management practices and included studies of the hydrology and water quality impacts as well as the benefits of downspout disconnection.
Laura has been invited to present at conferences sponsored by the NC Lake Management Society, Southeast Stormwater Association, North American Association for Environmental Education, and Environmental Educators of North Carolina. She has been named Project WET facilitator of the year for NC and is a past president of Environmental Educators of North Carolina.
