VOLCANOLOGY: GEOLOGY OF HAWAII

Dr. A. Boudreau

(boudreau@duke.edu)

Spring Semester

This is a 1 course credit class on volcanology and the geology and natural history of the Hawaiian Island chain.  A REQUIRED 11 day field trip will go to Maui and the Big Island over Spring Break.

Course format:  The course will consist of weekly lectures and discussions of readings on volcanology and the geology of Hawaii. Students will produce a final report on some aspect of volcanology and the geology of Hawaii and its impact on the local society and present it in class.

Course Registration and Field Trip Information

Estimated trip costs are $1,250.00 for the airfare and $95.00 for an optional Luau towards the end of the trip, both of which will be billed to your student account. Other costs include baggage fees for personal baggage and food during travel days. All other costs are covered by the department.  EOS/ENV students and those who have had an introductory earth sciences course will have preference for the limited space available. You must fill out and return to Dr. Boudreau the liability form (link below) to get a permission number to register for the course; this is to ensure that all students are aware of the trip costs and possible course conflicts.

Note: course costs are covered by financial aid for students receiving need-based grant aid

Please be aware of the following:

·         All tickets will be purchased through EOS, as we must arrive and leave as a group.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY COURSE CONFLICTS (EXAMS, ETC.) IN OTHER COURSES

It is strongly suggested that you check with all potential course instructors prior to registering for this class.  There are a number of Duke professors who will not allow you to miss scheduled class time without a penalty!  Dr. Boudreau can supply a letter if you need an official excuse (or refer them to this web site).

The group will be camping in state and national campgrounds while in Hawaii.  Because some of the campsites in Hawaii require a photocopy of a driver license (or passport) for us to reserve the sites, we will also need to photocopy your driver license when you bring the liability form to get a registration permission number.  This is also useful if, as has happened in the past, a student loses their driver's license - which can lead to problems getting on a commercial flight.

In summary, to get a permission number to register for the class, you need to bring the signed permission form and some form of official ID with your birth date to Dr. Boudreau (305 Old Chem Bldg.).
