Andrew Brown

What is your previous work experience?
I have worked for a private equity firm for nine years, and I am still working for that firm on a limited basis.  I started as an analyst, creating various financial reports and analyses, and worked my way up to Vice-President.  I now take on a number of roles, including sourcing and managing deals, and developing strategy at the fund-level.

Why did you choose the Nicholas School?
I asked an enthusiastic Yale graduate (class of '68), whose daughter attended the Nicholas School; "Should I go to Yale or Duke?"  Without hesitating, he said, "Go to Duke."

Do you have any areas of interest or special focus you will undertake during your time at the Nicholas School?
Although I am pursuing a "Business and Environment" degree, I have decided to "minor" in water management.  I have always found the flows of water around the globe fascinating, but I also see an investment opportunity in the land conservation and water infrastructure projects that will help supply fresh, clean water for the world's growing population.

What are you looking forward to as a new Nicholas School student?
I am most looking forward to getting to know my classmates, understanding their backgrounds and strengths, and, hopefully, collaborating with a group of them on a project in the future.

What future plans do you have for your career after the Nicholas School?
I plan on returning to my position ,full-time, at the private equity firm for which I work.  In that position, I will lead the effort in sourcing and investing in sustainability-oriented deals.  I will also look for opportunities to volunteer with the Delaware Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

Personal thanks:
I can not thank you enough for your generosity.  I have a wife and two children, and so forgoing two years of working was a difficult decision, one made far easier by your scholarship.  I can promise you that I will work hard and make the most of my opportunity at the Nicholas School.  In case you are wondering, I am studying both "business" and "water management", with the hope of investing in land conservation and water infrastructure projects when I return to work.  Thanks again.
