Transportation Planner, Gresham, Smith & Partners
Sean Flaherty grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina and attended NC State University where he met his partner Christina. While an undergraduate, Sean founded the university's first alternative spring break trip focused on sustainability. The service initiative led 12 students and faculty to the Community Baboon Sanctuary of Belize where the team was able to conserve over 10 acres of howler monkey habitat. The program still runs today and has seen over 120 students, faculty and alumni take part in service work across the globe.
Sean currently works for Gresham, Smith and Partners in Charlotte, NC as a transportation planner, leading the firms expansion into the state. Prior to this, Sean served as the Program Director for Envision Charlotte and managed multiple smart city initiatives focused on air quality, energy, water and waste. Sean has also worked as a regional planner focused on sustainability issues for over eight years, both at the Triangle J Council of Governments in Durham and the Centralina Council of Governments in Charlotte. This work included serving as the lead administrator of NC’s Plug-In Electric Vehicle Planning Readiness Initiative: Plugging in from Mountains to Sea and management of multiple programs including those funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and HUD-EPA-DOT Sustainable Communities Planning Initiative.
Sean and Christina Flaherty live in Charlotte where they are renovating a home within walking distance from the city's commuter rail. When not working on their first home, Sean enjoys kayaking, hiking and spending time with family and friends.
