Guillermo Ortuño Crespo

Guillermo Ortuño Crespo

Guillermo Ortuño Crespo is a 4th year Ph.D. candidate at the Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab (MGEL) and a Nereus Fellow with the Nippon Foundation Nereus Program. His research interests as an interdisciplinary marine geospatial ecologist are in the areas of international fisheries governance, marine migratory species and fisheries bycatch. Through his research, Guillermo attempts to understand the breadth of ecological impacts of fisheries in the open-ocean and uses computer models to inform area-based fisheries management in the high seas. His models not only explore the spatiotemporal distribution of target and non-target pelagic biodiversity, but also that of the global longline fishing fleet. Guillermo has been part of the MGEL delegation attending the PrepCom meetings for a new international legally binding instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of areas beyond national jurisdiction at the UN and has co-authored policy briefs for several of those meetings.
