What is your previous work experience?
Since I am fresh out of undergrad, I have not yet had a chance to work full-time. But during my time in college I conducted research on olfactory learning in fruit flies. I spent my free time on campus getting involved in diversity-based organizations, specifically those involving the LGBTQ community. I served as GSA President, I was on the LGBTQ Task Force, and I co-facilitated an experimental program for incoming LGBTQ students called the First Year LGBTQ Student Leadership Experience.
Why did you choose the Nicholas School?
For me, my choice was made after visiting the Nicholas School on Admitted Students Visitation Weekend. I was particularly impressed by the commitment to diversity and inclusion that the faculty, staff, and students displayed. I knew that if I attended the Nicholas School, I would be surrounded by people that want the best for me and want to help me succeed. Everyone I met was so warm and friendly and personable, and made me feel really welcome here at the Nicholas School.
Do you have any areas of interest or special focus you will undertake during your time at the Nicholas School?
While at the Nicholas School, I intend to work on a research project through the Superfund Research Center, which I am very excited about! I am looking forward to conduct research related to the exposure, effects, and impacts of hazardous chemicals on human health, while improving my skills and capabilities as a researcher.
What are you looking forward to as a new Nicholas School student?
As a Nicholas School student, I am excited to get involved with the various organizations on campus! I cannot wait to form meaningful connections with my peers, as well as the faculty and staff. I am also looking forward to all the ways the Nicholas School can help me build my resume, such as the GIS certification program. I am hoping that throughout my time at the Nicholas School, I will be able to grow as a person and develop all of the skills I need in order to pursue a career in my field.
What future plans do you have for your career after the Nicholas School?
After completing my education at the Nicholas School, I would love to work at a research institute and put the skills I will gain here to good use. Maybe one day I could even work for the EPA! However, the future is never set in stone so I like to be open-minded and I would be grateful for any opportunities that I am able to pursue thanks to my education at the Nicholas School.
