What is your previous work experience? Please describe.
During undergrad, I researched social and environmental responsibility within the fashion industry and supplemented my studies with CSR internships at a fashion brand and an apparel and footwear trade association. After graduation, I worked in social compliance at a fashion company based in Greensboro, NC. In this role, I reviewed audit reports for overseas factories and determined if the conditions met the company and licensor standards for labor rights. This role included ad-hoc sustainability projects, which taught me how much work is needed to improve the industry. This helped me decide to return to school and focus more on environmental sustainability with the fashion industry.
Why did you choose the Nicholas School?
The interdisciplinary approach to learning attracted me to the Nicholas School. I knew I wanted an environment where I could study both science and business and have the flexibility to focus on an area as I progressed through the program. The world-class faculty and impressive student body are also great features! I was able to speak with faculty even during my application process, which demonstrated to me how much the faculty cares about students. I also spoke with several current students and alumni and hearing them speak so highly of the program and the opportunities they had during the program and beyond solidified that the Nicholas School was the right choice for me.
What are you looking forward to as a new Nicholas School student?
I am excited to be surrounded by students and faculty all working together on how to best solve environmental issues. I am inspired by my peers and all the work they have done and plan to do, and I look forward to learning from and with the best. I'm also already excited about my Master's Project in two years because it will be a great way to push myself and apply what I've learned to a real client project.
Do you have any areas of interest or special focus you will undertake during your time at the Nicholas School?
I plan to focus on sustainability issues relevant to the apparel and fashion industry. More specifically, I would like to better my understanding of supply chain sustainability, such as energy, transportation, packaging, and agriculture, and apply those learnings to the apparel and fashion space.
What plans do you have for your career after the Nicholas School?
I hope to either work in a sustainability department at an apparel or fashion brand or become a consultant specializing in developing sustainability goals and action plans for brands. Sustainability within apparel and fashion is a growing field and I am excited to be part of the movement!
I would like to thank the donors who helped make my dream of attending the Nicholas School a reality. It is an honor to receive this scholarship and it has greatly reduced the financial burden of going back to school. I am thrilled that I can focus on learning and developing professional opportunities at such a wonderful school. I simply cannot thank you enough!
