Lake Okeechobee is the central component of the southern Florida watershed. With an average depth of only about 12 feet, the lake is only a shallow depression, yet covering an area of 730 square miles, the lake is large enough to store much of the urban drinking water supply which gets sent to Florida's coasts. Throughout the course of human's interference in the southern Florida region, Lake Okeechobee has been besieged by numerous problems, the most serious of which is nutrient enrichment.
