Large Mammals

Large mammals do exist in the region, although their appearance is much less common. The two largest land mammals inhabiting the region are the white-tailed deer and the Florida panther. The historic habitat of the Florida panther is widely spread across the region reflecting the range of is primary food sources, the white-tailed deer and the Florida key deer. However, while the deer’s presence has remained somewhat consistent, the endangered Florida panther inhabits only small portions of land within the Big Cypress National Preserve.
