We had our first full day of Jason II operations,
imaging the upper ocean crust (see photo of sheeted
dike complex) and collecting rock samples using
the vehicle’s mechanical arms. When Jason’s sample
baskets were full, the baskets were transported
to the surface, rising buoyantly using “elevators.”
After the samples were unloaded on deck, the baskets
were sent back down to the ocean floor to continue
sample collection.
