Will Addis, a second-year student in the Duke Environmental Leadership Master of Environmental Management (DEL-MEM) program, recently shared insights into why he's pursuing his degree, the highlight of his experience so far, and how he is applying what he's learning to his job.
Addis is a principal at Woodsea Ventures where he empowers awareness and action through impact investments that champion social progress and environmental sustainability.
I realized that establishing a meaningful career in environmental science would require a depth of knowledge that only a Duke education could provide. The accomplished Nicholas School professors, cutting-edge research centers, small cohorts of talented classmates, and unique learning format made the DEL-MEM program the obvious choice compared to other graduate programs.
Dan Vermeer led a group of students on a transformative two-week tour of Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Norwegian cities of Tromsø and Oslo, through a Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE) course, “Climate and Sustainability in the Nordic Countries”. Throughout our trip, DEL-MEM, along with other Duke master's students, met with various industry leaders who discussed the global implications of EU policy and climate standards, business opportunities in the Arctic region, and the scalability of sustainable ocean ventures.
I am actively investing in new initiatives that are directly inspired by my experience as a DEL-MEM student. For example, given the increasing threat of natural disasters coupled with rising environmental justice issues, I was motivated to launch an apparel brand, Threaded Impact Co., that’s dedicated to creating social and environmental change through every American-made garment. From choosing manufacturing partners in hurricane recovery zones to sending profits from every sale to communities rebuilding after devastating wildfires, every step of our products’ journey threads a positive impact in local communities and beyond.
Balancing my career and studies requires clear priorities, effective time management and a lot of flexibility. I am very intentional about how and where I spend my time. I structure my schedule around four pillars: achievement, connection, enjoyment and self-care. Fulfilling these four pillars every day, while also scheduling my time to stay organized, allows me to be present and self-aware. I’m learning about the importance of setting boundaries and taking time to recharge, so I can be my best self when it matters most. It's about creating a rhythm that allows me to grow professionally while achieving my academic goals.
