Temis Coral, a 2019 graduate of the Master of Environmental Management (MEM) program, recently shared insights into why she pursued an MEM degree, how the experience has helped in her career, her advice for anyone considering the program and more.

Coral is now sustainability & climate strategy practice lead at John Beath Environmental LLC, an environmental consulting firm. In her role, she leads a team of innovative consultants transforming the industry by developing decarbonization strategies for leading companies across several industries—including consumer products, chemicals and pet nutrition. She has developed and obtained approval for Science-Based & Net-Zero Targets for Fortune 500 companies that become the first in their sector to achieve this significant milestone.

How did your master's degree shape your career trajectory, long-term goals and opportunities?

The MEM program allowed me to develop the transferable skills required to become a next-generation sustainability leader. In just a few years, I was promoted multiple times to become the lead of one of the main practices of the company and even named partner. The MEM allowed me to hone the skills I required to do this.

What skills or experiences did you gain at Duke that have been most beneficial in your professional life?

While the list of professional skills that I gained at Duke is extensive, the most valuable experience I gained was the concept of using knowledge in service to society. While at Duke, I was able to internalize the idea of building a career with a bigger purpose, serving others while achieving professional growth.

Why did you choose Duke? What advice would you give to students considering or currently in the program?

We chose Duke (my husband, Edgar Virgüez, Ph.D.'22, is also a Duke alum) because it offered the best of both worlds: a unique environment to prepare us as competent and confident climate leaders leading the change and an inclusive Forever Duke environment where we could fulfill our personal dreams. We dreamed of a beautiful family and now my kids, Hannah and Noah, as well as Brownie (our fluffy dog) have joined us on this journey. We dreamed of careers that make an impact in our society and to be an example for other Colombians. My advice to students is to dream big and do it often.

What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at Duke?

Holding my daughter in my arms for the first time at Duke Hospital. Then, one year later, walking across the main stage at Wallace Wade Stadium as the MEM degree Marshal during the 2019 Duke Commencement. I hope that my story inspires Hannah and many other women to understand that you can still pursue motherhood while achieving professional excellence.
